The church at Yandoit has closed.
The present brick church was built in 1875 but the
church community goes back to 1859. Today the Yandoit church is truly a
beacon on the hill, annually marking the festival of Pentecost with a huge
bonfire and barbeque attracting visitors from all around central Victoria.
The normal Sunday-night congregation included descendants (to the sixth
generation) of James Morrison, one of the founders of the Yandoit church.
Another of the founders, Edward Stone Parker, is commemorated by a marble plaque in the church. E S Parker laboured unceasingly, before, during and
after the gold rushes (from 1838 to 1865) to protect the Dja Dja Wurrung. It
is good to reflect on his character, his zeal and his achievements.
